Co2 Fire Extinguisher
CO2 based fire extinguishers extinguish fire by taking away the oxygen element of the fire triangle and also by removing the heat with a very cold discharge. They can be used in firefighting without any fear of damaging the environment and sensitive equipment. Carbon dioxide is a conveniently available and hence an inexpensive firefighting agent. Adding to this, it is a versatile agent therefore, it is widely used for firefighting.
Carbon dioxide is almost twice the weight of air so it gets settled at the bottom of air and forms the blanket on surface of fuel and seal off oxygen supply, causing a blanketing effect to stop fire. As oxygen supply to the fire is stopped, fire suffocates and is extinguished. This is called smothering effect of carbon dioxide. The very popular CO2 fire extinguisher can be used on Class B, C & Electrical Fires.
Advantage in firefighting: As carbon dioxide is non-conductive, there are no chances of electrocution. This makes CO2 based fire extinguishers applicable on electronics and electrical equipment without any fear of electrocution.
This gas completely disappears in the atmosphere after use, leaving no residue, which means no cleaning is required after using a CO2 fire extinguisher. The agent carbon dioxide works on sensitive equipment and peripherals also, hence, these extinguishers reduce the down time caused by a fire accident and you do not have to wait for long to restart your work.
